The Coast Guard announced Wednesday night that it has suspended the search for a man who was reported to have gone overboard from a cruise ship that left Tampa.

Officials aboard the Carnival Paradise told the Coast Guard on Tuesday morning that Brian Lamonds, 50, of Greensboro, N.C., was missing and had gone overboard when the ship was about 85 miles of Fort Myers. The ship was bound for Key West.

Rescue crews searched for approximately 55 hours and covered about 3,059 square miles using two airplanes, a helicopter and a boat, according to the Coast Guard.

"Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly," said Cmdr. David Aldous, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard 7th District, in a prepared statement.
