What happened: Jackson was at a birthday party at his neighbor's house when he got into a verbal altercation with Etti Miezan. According to Miezan and witnesses, Jackson told his wife to "go get his gun." Jackson then left the party and returned with a firearm and opened fire in the street, shooting randomly. Miezan was shot in the upper left chest while trying to evade the bullets. Jackson and his wife then left the scene in a white Chevrolet Tahoe, but were apprehended by police shortly after. Jackson's car had bullet holes in the body and windows.
The outcome: Jackson was charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery; his wife was accused of tampering with evidence. The judge dismissed charges against Jackson's wife. A jury acquitted Jackson, who claimed he was acting in self-defense. Though the defense filed a motion for judgement of acquittal after evidence had been entered at trial, it was denied.

Trayvon Martin’s death became controversial because circumstances leading up to the shooting cast doubt on who was to blame. The Tampa Bay Times reviewed other “stand your ground” cases for similar circumstances. The Times relied on available information, some of which may not tell the whole story. When the situation was unclear, that was noted.
