Location details: road outside in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, on May 13, 2011

What happened: Very confusing police report but it appears there was an earlier street fight between Zavrina Jones, Michael Jolly and others that broke up when police arrived. According to her attorney, Jolly then threatened Jones and fired at her after the police left. Jones said she fired in self-defense during what appears to have been a wild shootout involving Jolly, Jones and a co-defendant, Zandra Jones.

The outcome: Judge granted Zavrina Jones immunity from prosecution.

Investigating agency: Daytona Beach Police

Case decision made by: Judge

Trayvon Martin’s death became controversial because circumstances leading up to the shooting cast doubt on who was to blame. The Tampa Bay Times reviewed other “stand your ground” cases for similar circumstances. The Times relied on available information, some of which may not tell the whole story. When the situation was unclear, that was noted.
