Location details: Car repair shop office in North Port, Sarasota County, on Aug. 01, 2006
What happened: David Alan Dodd and Kim Koenig were sleeping in a small car repair shop office when her ex-husband, Jerry Koenig, kicked in the door and attacked Dodd. They fought and Dodd repeatedly warned Koenig to get off him. Dodd grabbed a knife nearby and fatally stabbed Koenig in the chest. Dodd sustained extensive injuries to his head and face during the fight. Dodd was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
The outcome: Koenig's hands knuckles were bloody from punching Dodd and he had a high blood alcohol level and cocaine in his system a the time of the attack. When the State Attorney announced they were dropping second-degree murder charges, he said Dodd had acted in self-defense, so he was justified in using deadly force and did not have a duty to retreat.

Case decision made by: Prosecutor
Trayvon Martin’s death became controversial because circumstances leading up to the shooting cast doubt on who was to blame. The Tampa Bay Times reviewed other “stand your ground” cases for similar circumstances. The Times relied on available information, some of which may not tell the whole story. When the situation was unclear, that was noted.
Did the victim initiate the confrontation?
Was the victim armed?
Was the victim committing a crime that led to the confrontation?
Did the defendant pursue the victim?
Could the defendant have retreated to avoid the conflict?
Was the defendant on his or her property?
Did someone witness the attack?
Was there physical evidence?
