Location details: In the defendant's driveway in Naples, Collier County, on March 20, 2009

What happened: Sterlin F. Misener shot and killed a 19-year-old intruder shortly after 4 a.m. in his driveway. He found Patrick Hutchison coming out of his family's nearby camper and confronted him with a sawed-off shotgun. He said he pulled the trigger when the teen lunged at him. The teen was unarmed, and no one witnessed the shooting. Misener called 911 and waited for police. Misener and his wife had been robbed at gunpoint two years earlier in their home. Prior to that four teenagers admitted burglarizing the home looking for marijuana.

The outcome: Misener pleaded to a lesser weapons charge after his attorney cited "stand your ground." He was sentenced to four years probation for using an illegally modified shotgun. Police listed the shooting as a justifiable homicide.

Investigating agency: Collier County Sheriff

Case decision made by: Prosecutor

Trayvon Martin’s death became controversial because circumstances leading up to the shooting cast doubt on who was to blame. The Tampa Bay Times reviewed other “stand your ground” cases for similar circumstances. The Times relied on available information, some of which may not tell the whole story. When the situation was unclear, that was noted.
