Balance of power in Washington

U.S. Senate

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack and two other candidates are hoping to unseat Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who is seeking his third term.

About the job: Each state has two U.S. senators who serve staggered six-year terms. The legislative branch's prestigious upper chamber has several duties not afforded to the U.S. House, including consenting to treaties and confirming appointments. U.S. senators are paid $174,000 per year.

Hernando County

Congressional District 11

Then-Hernando Sheriff Rich Nugent drew criticism in 2010 when he agreed to a stealthy arrangement with his predecessor in Congress, Ginny Brown-Waite, to file at the last minute to run for what was then the District 5 seat. Two years later, Nugent caught a break when the once-a-decade redistricting process prevented a contest with New Port Richey Republican state Sen. Mike Fasano, and no other formidable Republican stepped up to challenge him. Now, only perennial candidate David Werder, running as a Democrat this year, stands between Nugent and a second two-year term.

The 11th Congressional District includes all of Citrus, Hernando and Sumter counties and most of Marion County.

Pasco County

Congressional District 12

Redistricting pushed U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis' district into all of Pasco County, with slices of northern Hillsborough and Pinellas. As a sitting member of Congress, he has raised more than $500,000, dwarfing his opponents' campaign chests. Most analysts view the seat as safe for Republicans, but a young Democrat and two independents hope to upset that apple cart.

Congressional District 13

This race pits veteran C.W. Bill Young, first elected to Congress in 1970, against newcomer Jessica Ehrlich, a lawyer and former congressional aide. Ehrlich has called Young out of touch with the electorate, but she has been stymied by Young's refusal to show up for debates and she has been attacked by a local blogger who questioned details of her resume. Meanwhile Young made news by changing his position on Afghanistan, telling someone asking about the minimum wage to "Get a job!" and contending he'd been the victim of politically motivated break-ins even though police say they can't find any evidence they occurred.
