In just two years, Grain and Berry franchises have spread across the Tampa Bay area.

It first came to Palm Harbor in 2017. The following year, locations came to the USF area and Westchase. A few weeks ago saw the opening of a Brandon mall kiosk, and a now a new South Tampa location has opened.

Grain and Berry features pun-intended bowls like "Oh Kale No", "Seas the Day", "Vitamin Sea" or the "Beach Please."

South Tampa franchisee Roger Hector believes the key to Grain and Berry's success rests in their product's taste and presentation.

"We are all about aesthetics and proportions," said Hector. "As soon as people get their bowls, the very first thing they do is take pictures of them and share it on Instagram," he said.

Guests can customize their bowls by choosing a base, either acai, kale or pitaya, then top it with fruit, granola, honey, or nuts. Or they can try the smoothies, avocado toasts or energy shots.

The South Tampa location is consistent with other locations' menu, coffee-shop vibe and wood-paneled decor.

But there's one distinct feature.

Hector and his fraternity brother Timothy Adams are the company's first black owners. They believe their presence has encouraged the African American community to become more health conscious.

"The most enjoyable part is to bring something to people that are trying to change their lifestyle to become healthier, and especially to the African American community, where we have a problem with our diet and health issues," Hector said.

For Adams, opening and owning a health-conscious cafe has been the epitome of the American Dream.

"Getting our doors open is a huge accomplishment," said Adams, "and a health food cafe I think is the real surprise to people."

Prices range from $4.49 for shots to $10.83 for its bowls. Grain and Berry South Tampa operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day at 1155 S Dale Mabry Highway. For more information visit grainandberry.com.
