ST. PETERSBURG — A motorcycle driver suffered serious injuries early Saturday when he lost control and crashed at Sheffield Lake Park, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Robert Douglas Blume, 47, was driving north along 49th Street N on a 2006 Honda VTX1300 around 1 a.m. when he failed to follow the road and drove onto the grass, police said. Blume re-entered the road near 23rd Avenue N and lost control, striking the ground on the motorcycle's side and sliding across the roadway before coming to a rest on a grass field in the park.

Blume was not wearing a helmet. Police believe alcohol was involved.

Blume was transported to Bayfront Health St, Petersburg with life-threatening injuries.
